What makes a 2.0 ATA hard-chamber session different?
MP Health runs hyperbaric oxygen therapy in a seated hard-shell chamber pressurized to 2.0 ATA. You breathe 100% oxygen by mask for about 90 minutes. Many wellness HBOT options use soft chambers, which typically run around 1.3 to 1.5 ATA on room air or added oxygen. We only offer hard chambers.
Hard chamber vs. soft chamber
| MP Health | Typical soft chamber | |
|---|---|---|
| Chamber | Seated hard shell | Inflatable soft shell |
| Pressure | 2.0 ATA | About 1.3–1.5 ATA |
| Oxygen | 100% by mask | Room air, sometimes with added oxygen |
| Session length | About 90 minutes | Varies |
Pressure matters because much of the published research on brain and aging uses 2.0 ATA. That doesn't make a higher pressure right for everyone; it's one reason to ask any provider what pressure and oxygen you would actually get.
Is this the Israeli protocol?
Our 60-session program is modeled on the protocol studied at Shamir Medical Center in Israel: 90-minute sessions at 2.0 ATA, five days a week, breathing 100% oxygen with air breaks as the protocol calls for. MP Health is not affiliated with Shamir or its researchers.
What the research shows, and how strong it is
HBOT is an established treatment for a specific list of conditions, such as non-healing wounds and carbon monoxide poisoning. Research on wellness and brain uses is newer: the studies are small, some had no comparison group, and results haven't been widely repeated. We'll walk you through what's known and what isn't before you decide.
One frequently cited example: Hachmo et al., Aging, 2020, a study of 35 healthy adults aged 64 and older who completed 60 sessions.
Who supervises, and how screening works
Before your first session, a member of our clinical team reviews your health history. The most common effect is ear pressure, like on a plane. Some people notice temporary changes in vision or feel tired. People with certain lung, ear or sinus conditions, or on some medications, may not be candidates. We check this before you start.
Cost and commitment
The full program is 60 sessions over about 12 weeks. Per-session cost is lower in longer programs; see the program page for current pricing. Most insurance plans don't cover HBOT for wellness use, but we're happy to check yours with you at the clinic.
