Is hyperbaric oxygen therapy worth it for healthy aging?

Is hyperbaric oxygen therapy worth it for healthy aging?

It depends on your goals, your health and the commitment you're ready for. Here's an honest look at what HBOT involves at MP Health, what the research does and doesn't show, and how to talk it through with our team before you decide.

What's actually known

A 2020 study of 35 healthy adults over 64 found changes in cellular markers of aging after 60 sessions (read the study). It was a small study without a comparison group, and it hasn't been repeated, so we don't promise anti-aging results. HBOT may help, and a clinician will talk through whether it fits your goals.

What a session feels like

You sit in a hard-shell chamber, breathing 100% oxygen through a mask, for about 90 minutes. As the chamber pressurizes you'll feel pressure in your ears, similar to a plane descending; our team shows you how to clear it. Many people read, listen to something or rest.

The time and cost commitment

Our structured program is 60 sessions, five days a week, over about 12 weeks. That's a real commitment, and it's worth weighing before you start. Per-session cost is lower in longer programs; see the program page for current pricing. Most insurance plans don't cover HBOT for wellness use, but we're happy to check yours with you at the clinic.

Is it safe for me?

Before your first session, a member of our clinical team reviews your health history. The most common effect is ear pressure, like on a plane. Some people notice temporary changes in vision or feel tired. People with certain lung, ear or sinus conditions, or on some medications, may not be candidates. We check this before you start.

Why people look into HBOT with us

People come to MP Health exploring hyperbaric oxygen therapy for many reasons, including recovery, brain health and staying active as they age. We don't promise that HBOT will treat or cure any condition. Before anyone starts, a member of our clinical team reviews their health history and talks through what is and isn't known.
